This extensive memoir gives excellent, primary source insights, from the Presidential home and office into the issues, personalities and causes of the Confederate States of America, public opinion, and into the personality and temperance of the Confederate President as well. President Davis had an often austere, aloof, and perplexing public demeanor which offered few clues as to what kind of man he really was. Varina Davis's perceptive narrative offers unique insight into all aspects of her husband's life. This is a complete, matching two-volume set. Volume I is concerned with his formative public career from birth through army and congressional service. It has a handsome frontispiece of Jefferson Davis and contains 699 pages. Volume 2 tells the story of the Civil War as Jefferson Davis and his family saw it, has a nice matching frontispiece of Varina Davis and contains 939 pages. THIS BOOK IS IN FINE - CONDITION This original, scarce, First Edition, complete, two-volume, antique book set is in excellent condition. It comes protected in clear, acid-free, Mylar dust jackets (see photo #3). The book set is handsomely bound in 3/4 genuine leather covers, with marbled boards, end pages and page ends; and bright, gold, decorative highlights and lettering on the spine. The gold lettering is exceptionally sharp and bright. The exteriors are clean and have no bumping or discernible edge wear except the chip at the top spine tip of Volume II; the set is in fine condition otherwise. The exterior is sharp and bright. The interiors are clean and the pages are in excellent condition. The books have no writing, smudging, stamps, pasteboard or other markings. There is a touch of foxing on the frontispiece tissue guard of Volume II, but there is no other foxing throughout the book set. This is not an ex-library book set. The binding is solid and in great condition throughout both books. The books have no looseness or lean and all four hinges are fine. Volume I has 699 pages and Volume II has 939 pages. All pages are printed on sturdy, stock paper. A wonderful leather bound, handsome, original, first edition, antique book set on Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
