Description: An antique Japanese hand carved wood advertising sign for a shop that sold "Sake" (rice wine) It's one piece of solid zelkova hard wood. ("Keyaki" in Japanese) This a wood known for its durability and the beauty of its wood grain. The writing is carved into the wood with the central kanjis coated with black lacquer. (Makie) On the right side (as we're looking at the photo) it says, this is a "Ueda (a family name) sake store"The large center kanji is the character for "Chuyu" The name of the sake. The top has "Great Japan good sake" (Before 1945 "Dai" Nihon was "Great" Japan. Similar to Great Britain. At that time it included Japan and all its colonies. Japan lost all their colonies at the end of WW2 and became Just "Nihon" or "Japan") The writing is read right to left. This changed direction (Left to right) in the 1930's so their reading was similar in direction with western writing. This helps in dating this sign as being made i n the early 1900's It's 35 3/4 inches wide, 24 1/2 inches high, 7/8 inches thick and weighs 18 pounds. (It's a dense, hard wood) The two vertical brackets in the back are common with Japanese wood signs. They're dove tailed in and help maintain the sign as a flat surface.
