Description: This beautiful sculpture by American artist J. Paul Fennell (1938-) is made of myrtlewood and was created by a woodturning technique. The piece is a hollow form vessel with natural variations in the surface and a multidirectional grain pattern. The bottom of the vessel features Fennell's signature, 1989, and 97. It measures approximately 4 inches in height and 5.25 inches at the widest point. Fennell began turning wood in the 1970s as a mostly self-taught hobby. He used discarded and found wood pieces which allowed Fennell to explore different textures, grains, and color. His early works focused on hollow vessels as a shape that he could manipulate into a variety of styles. This led to forms that appear solid but are unexpectedly light in weight due to the production technique. Fennell's latest works take this a step further by creating vessels from lattice designs. His art is featured in prominent museums throughout the United States, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Peabody-Essex Museum, and Minneapolis Institute of Art, and Boston Museum of Fine Art.
