Have you heard of fermenting your chicken feed? It's a great solution to saving money and keeping your flock happy. All you need is a few mason jars, some sort of breathable lid (I use paper towels with a rubber band to secure over the top of the jar), and distilled water. There are many reasons to ferment your chicken feed. Fermenting makes the nutrients more available for digestion, makes the chickens feel more full on less feed, makes their eggs and shells very healthy and great tasting, and makes for less waste in the coop. Fermenting Instructions:Fill four to eight 24 oz mason jars, each with 1-1.5 cups dry feed.Fill each jar to the top with distilled water. (Distilled water can be made by letting a jug of tap water sit out on the counter for 24 hours).Stir gently until entire amount of feed mix is mixed with water.Cover jars with breathable cover.Let sit for 24-48 hours (stirring at least once per day). When ready to feed, strain the mixture and save the fermented water. Put strained food into a feeder dish. For example, give 6 chickens 2 jars of strained fermented feed in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. (About 4 to 6 cups of dry feed per day). After straining, pour fermented water back into each jar. (Fermented water can be re-used 2-3 times. Re-using the water can speed up the fermenting process to as little as 12 hours.) It should have a slight sourdough smell. If the smell is too strong, discard and start with fresh distilled water. Add more dry feed right away.Add more distilled water in order to fill each jar to the top again.Stir, cover, and repeat all steps as necessary.
