Description: History of the Indian tribes of North America large folio lithographs McKenney Very unique and rare offering! This is the 1844 edition of the Large print which once contained 120 illustrations and biographies. The original paintings were housed in the Smithsonian and all but 5 were consumed by fire in 1865. After the 1865 fire at the Smithsonian, this book became the only record of the likeness of many of the Indian leaders who are depicted in this work. This book, in particular, was held first by the Polytechnic Society of Kentucky, and then was transferred to the Louisville Free Public Library which later handed it over to the JB Speed Art Museum, whom later handed it over to the individual we purchased the remaining biographies, outer book cover, and the 4 remaining matted lithographs. Contained lithographs are of; No-Way-Ke-Sug-Ga Dtoe Tah-Col-O-Quoit Chon-Man-I-Case - An Otto half Chief Wa-Na-Ta - The Charger - The Grand Chief of the Sioux The lithographs measure; 12" x 17" and with the matte are 15" x 20" Condition: All Lithographs show some foxing and yellowing, with mild discolorations. The artwork itself is still bright, vibrant, and eye-catching. The folio of course is deconstructed and in poor condition, with biography and essay pages out of order with expected damage from age and being a former library copy, as well as, being deconstructed for art pieces. History on this book Thomas l. McKenney, a Quaker, served as the US Government's Superintendent of Indian Affairs from 1824 - 1830. During this period he worked with the renowned American artist Charles Bird King, commissioning the artist to paint portraits of Native leaders who were visiting the government in DC. The fame of the paintings soon spread, and McKenney conceived of a massive printing project to record them in book form. At the same time, incoming president Andrew Jackson fired McKenney after McKenney fundamentally rejected Jackson's stance on the US's relationship with indigenous nations. Suddenly jobless, McKenney threw himself into the project, mounting one of the most ambitious book projects ever seen in the United States up to that time. Please see photo gallery for condition.
