Description: Rare original edition, "In Re Adam Clayton Powell Hearings Before Select Committee Pursuent to H. Res. 1 Ninetieth Congress First Session on H. Res. 1 To report upon the right of Adam Clayton Powell to be sworn in as a representative from the State of New York in the 90th Congress February 8, 14, 16, 1967" This is the official U.S. Government Printing Office report on hearings to determine whether Powell would retain his seat. The book is about 9 inches by 6 inches and 269 pages. It is in excellent condition, clean, tight binding, no tears or stains, with "POWELL" handwritten on the spine. According to Wikipedia, "In January 1967, the House Democratic Caucus stripped Powell of his committee chairmanship...A Select House Committee was established (in February 1967) upon the House's reconvening for the 90th Congress to further investigate Powell's misconduct to determine if he should be allowed to take his seat." This report is an exhaustive record of the hearings, with transcripts and images of evidence in relation to Powell including his birth certificate, tax return, canceled checks, etc. This particular copy is from the library of the late Congressman Charles E. Wiggins, of California's 25th District. It is interesting to note that Wiggins "fiercely defended Nixon during debate on the House Judiciary Committee over Nixon's impeachment," though he later withdrew his support.
