Seven species ofpeony are found in Greece, of which Paeonia clusii (Crete, Karpathos and Rhodes) and Paeonia parnassica (Mounts Parnassos and Elikonas) are Greek endemics. It is distinguished from other peony species by its characteristic deep dark red petals. Known only from a few scattered localities on Mounts Parnassos and Elikonas in Central Greece, it grows in wet meadows, ravines and openings of Greek fir (Abies cephalonica) forests, at an altitude of 800-1,500 m, and blooms from late April to early June. It is listed in the Red Data Book of Rare and Threatened Plants of Greece (2009) as «Vulnerable». One of the main threats it faces is human activity, notably the collection of its rhizomes or whole plants.
