Description: Gorgeous study of a Breton child 1903 by Emma Barton 1872-1938 who exhibited under the name of Mrs G A Barton. From a vintage copy of Amateur Photographer 1903. Emma Barton was born in Birmingham in 1872. She was the daughter of railway porter Ambrose Rayson (-1885) and his wife Elizabeth. After the death of her father in 1885 from pneumonia her mother remarried and through family connections Emma had her first contact with photography. She married solicitor George Albert Barton, with whom she had three daughters and two sons and appears to have lived with as a common law wife. Emma Barton was an active photographer in the early 1900’s and she exhibited at the Royal Photographic Society from 1901 until 1914. One of the leading Pictorial photographers of her day her work was in demand and was published in a number of contemporary journals as well as in the form of illustrations for calendars, books, postcards and greetings cards. Her photograph The Awakening received a medal at the 1903 Royal Photographic Society Exhibition and in 1904 she had a solo exhibition at the RPS, becoming a member in 1908. 1911 saw her exhibit her first autochromes, she continued exhibiting widely particularly at the London Salon until her retirement to the Isle of Wight in the early 30’s.
