COHAN - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED - HFSID 283568 GEORGE M. COHAN Chatty thank you letter, handwritten and signed in pencil, discussing Charles Dickens and the Boston Red Sox Autograph Letter signed: "George M." in pencil, 1 page, 6¾x10. No place, no date, Saturday". To "Dear Anne", in full: "Thanks for the Dickensians. Who told you that I'm one of the real Dickens fans of America? Haven't had time as yet to look them through but I know I'll love the little booklets. Also thanks for the 'Connecticut Captain'. I'll get at that one too. It's mighty nice of you my dear to think of me so often. Hope your Red Sox keep up their good work. Looks to me like an open race in the American League. I'm spending most of my time in the country these days. Me no like the big City hot weather. Love". Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper left. George M. Cohan (1878-1942) began his career as a child in Vaudeville as part of The Four Cohans. By the time he was a teen, his original skits and songs were being published and sold. In 1904, Little Johnny Jones which introduced "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "The Yankee Doodle Boy" was his first Broadway hit. Cohan wrote the book, music and lyrics for 20 musicals and was one of the leading Tin Pan Alley songwriters, publishing upwards of 1500 original songs. His shows include Forty-five Minutes from Broadway, Hello, Broadway and The Song and Dance Man. His autobiography was published in 1925 -Twenty Years on Broadway and the Years It Took to Get There. Cohan songs include "Yankee Doodle Dandy", "Give My Regards to Broadway", "Over There" and "You're a Grand Old Flag". If "Connecticut Captain" refers to the C. S. Forester novel Captain from Connecticut, published in 1941, this letter dates from the last year of Cohan's life. Further evidence for such a date is the reference to the long dormant Boston Red Sox, who in 1942 had their best season since 1918. Cohan. Who died on November 5, 1942, lived long enough to see Jimmy Cagney portray him in the film Yankee Doodle Dandy, attending in a wheel chair against his doctor's advice and loving the performance. The Dickensian is a journal published by the Dickens Fellowship, devoted to all aspects of the author's life and works. Horizontal and vertical folds. Creased and lightly toned. Soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: GEORGE M. COHAN See more listings in our ACTORS & ACTRESSES (13,292) category. Please note that this is an authentically signed item.
