Description: FROM SHUL TO COOL: THE ROMANTIC JEWISH ROOTS OF AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC, by Jacqueline Bassan, M.D.-turned author, 2002 1st edition, Jay Street Publishers (New York City), 9.2 x 6.3-inch linen-clad HB with embossed blue lettering at spine, unusually tick, glossy DJ, 353 pp. with text and superb 15-page B&W photo section printed on high-quality, semi-thick, white polished stock which looks new and durable at age 21; like new condition - book and DJ, with $23.95 at lower rear edge to right of bar code box. PLEASE NOTE: The author neatly inscribed and signed in blue ink at the top of the title page ("To Stacey and Brad, with best wishes, Jacqueline Bassan"). The author, daughter of a Holocaust survivor, earned a B.A. in history from Cornell University before studying music theory at Brandeis University with world-famous composer and musicologist Joshua Rifkin. She then earned an M.D. from Mount Sinai Medical School in 1982. Before she could fully embrace a sterling medical career in her adopted city of Los Angeles, she decided to become a professional writer, and contributed article to Los Angeles Magazine, The Jewish Journal, and Entrepreneur Magazine. This delightful, informative, diligently researched book about the many Jews who helped create much of early 20th century (and later) American popular music which dominated radio, Broadway and films, is a remarkable achievement. Among the icons who earn chapters are Emma Lazarius, 19th-century poet whose "American Prometheus" provided the text on the base on The Statue Of Liberty, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Leonard Bernstein, Lerner and Lowe, Kurt Weill, Harold Arlen, and Benny Goodman. Dozens of others are featured. There are a few other HBs on eBay, none signed. I was unable to find a signed copy on the other major book (an everything else) site, or any of the many rare book stores linked to Google. So it's a rare tile signed, more so in like new condition. The Buy-It-Now price of $16.99 includes shipping bubble-wrapped in a cardboard box via media mail, which takes around 7 days with tracking.
