Flourite Black Sand is most effective when used alone as an integral substrate bed, but it may be mixed with other gravels. Gravel modifiers such as laterite are not necessary. Flourite Black Sand is not chemically coated or treated and will not alter the pH of the water. Flourite Black Sand is good for the life of the aquarium and need not be replaced.Set-up Although it is pre-washed, because Flourite Black Sand is a natural product, it may become dusty in transit and require rinsing before use to remove any residual dust. I was using a lighter sand and wanted to switch to black but was concerned I wouldn’t be able to see fish poop but I can. It’s got a little bit of white and silver flecks that I really like. I only have anubias so I don’t bury them and can’t comment on how well plants grow. Took me roughly 30 rinse and dumps in a small cooler to get the water clear but I’m glad I kept doing it because the water was totally clear when I filled my tank and I never had to wait for it to settle. It looks beautiful in my tank.My favorite sand so far 8 Dec 20Honestly this stuff gets a lot of hate, but I’ve kept a decent variety of plants in it. I made the mistake of straight dumping it into my 40 gallon breeder 2 or so years ago when I set it up, and it does still give off a good bit of silt and dust when disturbed, but overall it looks really good! It’s also soft enough that the fish who like to screw around in it (mainly my plecos when they wiggle and extend their fins for dominance over food) have never been harmed by any rough pieces. I’m using it as a top layer with aqueon clay balls as a base in several new setups though, and I’m curious as to how that will go. I’m hoping for better results with certain shallow rooting plants (*cough* looking at you hairgrass species, you picky little turds), but overall I’d say this stuff should work pretty well for most species that need to be rooted in substrate. I’ve had Hygrophila difformis and cabomba grow like wildfire in this stuff, and I’m fairly certain that it also allows some nutrient leech into the water for plants like my hornwort to grow like mad as well. If you like fine black sand, don’t mind a lot of rinsing, and want something that is absolutely perfect for fish who like to burrow or play in the substrate like cories, loaches, or some plecos, I’d say this stuff is worth a try.very dirty but looks nice if you out in the effort to clean it 30 Nov 20The sand looks nice and not to powdery but took forever to clean you will probly lose about 1/10 of your sand after your done cleaning itvery fine sand. great for live plants 24 Nov 20great for live plants. very fine black sand, so you will not want to use gravel suction cleaner on these. this is for planted tanks. will make water dark/cloudy for a couple of days after you put it in no matter how much you rinse before hand. But it will be fine, all my fish survived.Black substrate looks nice but expensive! 11 Nov 20I've never had black substrate before so I wasn't sure how this would look, I was worried my shrimp tank would look too dark. I'm really happy with how it turned out, it makes the colors of the plants and rocks pop out more. I had to rinse this stuff a lot. I rinsed around 1/4 of a 15 lbs bag at a time in a bucket, until the water was more black than a mucky green. It's too fine to rinse in a regular kitchen strainer. After filling up the tank with water it took around 1 or 1.5 days to clear up. I had two HOB filters running to clear it up, not sure if the second filter sped it up or not. I also had to order a second bag because one 15 lbs bag only filled up around 1" in my 20 gallon (24"x12" base) which would be too little for my plants. I'd still like a bit more but don't want to spend over $100 on substrate. Compared to other substrates I've used (mostly just standard gravel) this stuff is expensive! Certainly never add this product without an initial wash.Poor Quality Control 25 Sep 20My bag had lots of pieces of red/brown rock mixed in. Most of it was clay colored but some were gray to white, large aquarium gravel size pieces and some flakes. I sifted and picked them out, but was frustrated that at $30 the quality control was so poor.1 bag came with a cut in it. Took 200 gallons of water to wash. 25 Aug 20It took me near an hour and 200 gallons of water to clean this sand fully. You must wash it until your water is clear being dumped out. Mostly good on the shipping except 1 bag was cut and leaking sand. I was offered a $18 refund for the issue, which is fine considering the situation. Box was marked as heavy and looked like somebody had played soccer with it, that is probably why the bag was ripped. I weighed a bag of sand and you get 17.5 pounds of sand which will go down to 15 once you clean it with water and a bucket until the water is clear running out. This sand works great, it has nutrients built in for growing plants so you don't need to buy plant nutrients or tablets to help them grow.
