Description: First Lady Frances Cleveland Handwritten Letter with Envelope Dated 1895 - PSA/DNA Letter of Authenticity Frances Clara Cleveland Preston (1864–1947) served as First Lady of the United States from 1886 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897, as the wife of President Grover Cleveland. Frances Folsom first encountered Grover Cleveland as an infant, as her father, Oscar Folsom, was a close friend of Cleveland. After Oscar’s death in 1875, Cleveland became the executor of his estate, settling his debts and caring for Frances and her mother, Emma. Frances attended Wells College, and following her graduation, she married Cleveland while he was still in office. After he lost the 1888 election, the couple retreated to private life for four years, during which they began raising their family. When Cleveland was re-elected in 1892, Frances devoted much of her second term as First Lady to her children. The Clevelands had five children, four of whom reached adulthood. Frances became an advocate for education, serving on the board of Wells College, supporting women’s education, and championing the construction of kindergartens. She passed away in 1947 and was laid to rest next to her first husband Grover in Princeton Cemetery.
