Description: Euphorbia ornithopus Euphorbia ornithopus is found in the Southeastern part of South Africa. This odd little plant is in the giant plant genus Euphorbia, and within the succulent euphorbia group, it’s rather small in size. This species grows more like a ground cover, with the small clumps being composed of stubby, sometimes globular and sometimes elongated and tubular, stems. As odd as the stems are, this small plant holds another oddity in the form of its flowering parts, which in Euphorbia are called cyathia. The cyathia of this species have pronged glands that look like little white bird feet surrounding the tiny flower, hence the species name. You'll receive one of the 1-2" plants in the first five photos, bare-root, without soil or pot. The other photos are of my parent plant, from which this seedling was grown, and a few of the older seedlings. These seedlings often start out with elongated stems, but the plants start producing stubby, more globular stems at this stage. For best growthSoil/Medium: coarse, well draining, cactus/succulent soil; these do best in a chunkier mix that includes extra lava or pumice)Light: minimum 3-4 hours direct sun; morning sun/afternoon shade works greatWater: deeply every 2-3 weeks, let the soil dry between waterings. In its native habitat Euphorbia ornithopus receives winter rainfall, and here in the Bay Area in California, I grow mine outside all year long without issue. They get rain in the winter and some additional irrigation in the summer. They can take temperatures as low as 30F, as long as it’s in a fast-draining coarse soil. They grow unprotected in multiple locations at the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, where temps can drop to 30F and below, although not for extended periods of time. *All Euphorbia contain a toxic white sap. If you get it on your skin immediately wash it off to ensure you do not transfer it to your eyes, nose, or mouth as the irritation can be mild to severe depending on the species. I’ve never had an issue with this plant, but play it safe! *Shipped USPS Ground Advantage, on Mondays, excluding holidays. *Usually arrives in 3-5 business days from shipment date, depending on destination. *Combined shipping is available, contact me with your request before purchasing. *No phytosanitary certificates or other documentation will be provided.
