It controls the idle speed by regulating the opening and closing of the butterfly valve on the carburetor. When the engine is cold, the thermostat keeps the valve closed which supplies a richer fuel mixture to the engine. COMMON SIGNS OF A FAILING ELECTRIC CHOKE THERMOSTAT: Engine will not start when cold: If the electric choke thermostat fails to close when the engine is cold, it can cause difficulty in starting the engine. Stalling: If the electric choke thermostat fails to open when the engine is warm, it can cause the engine to stall. Hesitation during warm-up: If the electric choke thermostat fails to open gradually as the engine warms up, it can cause hesitation during acceleration.
