Legend/Description of the subject depicted in the print: Necropolis of Thebes was a large field of tombs dating from the 6th Dynasty (c2400-2255 BC). it was located on the West side of the Nile river. Beni Hassan could be described as a typical Middle-Kingdom necropolis. The time had passed when high-ranking government officials were buried near their king (as in Saqqara and Giza): the upheavals of the First Intermediate period (2140-2022 BC) gave a certain independence to local governors (nomarchs) and it was from then on that they tended to be buried in their own nome. Twelve of the thirty-nine great rock-cut tombs are decorated and five of these are truly remarkable, not only for their architectural beauty, but also for their vast, vaulted chambers and their choice of columns. Champollion classified the columns with cut-off comers as "proto-Doric" and believed he had discovered the ancestor of the Greek Doric order. The name of Baqet, one of the architects, was found. These tombs are also remarkable for the richness and originality of their décor. The tombs of Amenemhet, "prince of the Oryx Nome", Khnumhotep III, "the hereditary lord", Khnumhotep I, Baqit III and Khety feature traditional scenes of agricultural life, hunting in papyrus thickets, pilgrimages by boat to Abydos A 386 and Busiris, and the presentation of offerings to the deceased who is represented in "heroic" proportions, seated on a chair. The desert hunting scenes on the north wall of tomb of Amenemhet depart from the classical repertoire and, on the north wall of tomb of Baqit III, include the hunting of four fantastical creatures: a "Sethian" animal, a griffin, a serpent-headed quadruped and a unicom. These creatures are clearly a representation of the belief that the desert was the home of the evil forces of chaos and that hunting in the desert helped to preserve cosmic order. The training of men in violent sports and military exercises was a constant preoccupation of the suzerains of the Oryx Nome, who had to maintain their power by force. In tomb of Amenemhet (on the north wall) Asiatic tribesmen, led by their chief Abisha, have come, with their donkeys, to sell kohl (of which the Egyptians used a great deal). This is the most famous representation of these nomadic Bedouins, who lived and traveled along the eastern borders of Egypt. There are two biographical inscriptions in the necropolis that are essential to an understanding of the political and economic situation of Egypt at that time, when the country was emerging from over a century of serious upheavals. One of these is a thirty-two-line inscription on the interior uprights of the door of this tomb. Fig. 9 represents the entrance to the tomb of Pharaoh Sesortasen I. (3000-2800 BC). Fig. 10,11,12, and 13 depict the plan and some of the details. Fig. 15. depicts a capital of a column in the shape of lotus. Fig. 8 represents the entrance to the tomb of Rameses VI, which archeologist Champollion occupied during his work at the Valley of Biban-el-Moluk. Fig. 5 is the tomb of Rameses V, Fig. 6 Rameses VI and Fig. 7. tomb of Menephtah-Siphtah, Fig. 2. Tomb of Amounoph-Memnon and Fig. 3 and 4. Tomb of Menephtah, Fig. 1. Tomb of Rameses Meiamoun.
