That includes longer battery life, higher-grade 10mm drivers with rigid titanium diaphragms, and Bluetooth 5.3 with lossless, CD-quality streaming. But the headline feature remains the same: sound that's personalized to the listener. Tap the left earbud on the Denon PerL Pro to toggle between noise cancellation and "social" mode. These earbuds also layer on Dirac's spatial audio processing to extend the soundstage outside your head. That's optional, but I found that it made the sound even more engaging — while maintaining key musical detail. Sound that's customized for your hearing I paired these noise-canceling earbuds to my phone via Bluetooth, then I immediately downloaded the Denon Headphones mobile app — free for Apple® and Android™. The app unlock the "magic" of the Masimo Adaptive Acoustic Technology (AAT), which measures your hearing and serves up a unique tuning optimized for your ears. I found the AAT processing added life to the even-keeled tuning out of the box. There was more body and volume to the mids, relaxed detail in the highs, and authoritative bass thump. One track that really showed off the PerL Pro's sonic prowess: the Dolby Atmos mix of "Swamp" on the Talking Heads live album Stop Making Sense. I could feel the loose energy of the crowd and the venue, and got a great sense of the room. But I could also pick up on very specific sounds from the band "in front of me" on stage — all held together by the tight percussion. How does it work? Using a quick tone test, the AAT system determines how well you hear a range of frequencies in both ears. The tones cause the hair cells in your inner ear to vibrate and sends sounds back to the earbuds. These sounds are called otoacoustic emissions and are practically inaudible — but the PerL earbuds have a series of powerful built-in mics that can pick them up. Since the system relies on these sounds, you don't have to manually provide any feedback about what you're hearing. It will automatically sense if you have any hearing weaknesses or quirks. In my case there was some lower-frequency discrepancy between my left and right ears. Denon's technology was able was able to compensate and balance it out. Touch control, adaptive noise cancellation and awareness feature You can control music, adjust volume, take phone calls and more by touch. Active noise-canceling circuitry helps knock out external distractions while you listen to your music or podcasts. Denon's adaptive processing can Tap the left earbud to toggle off noise cancellation and activate "social" mode, Denon's transparency feature. It turns off noise cancellation and uses the built-in mics to amplify external sounds, keeping you aware of your surroundings. You can also adjust these features and customize the controls in the app. You get up to eight hours of battery life with noise cancellation, and the case banks enough power for three full charges. Five sets of ear tips included Denon includes one set of malleable foam tips and four sizes of silicone ear tips to help with fit and comfort. You'll notice the overall earbud design is bigger than most, to make room for the drivers and extra circuitry. But the weight is well distributed and the piece that actually goes into your ear is only a tad larger than average. There are two sizes of optional support wings that follow the shape of your ear to keep the earbuds stable and secure. Use the app to ensure a proper fit Denon doesn't expect you to jam them into your ears, either. They kind of rest inside your ears and don't fit as deep as most in-ear headphones. In fact, at one point the app told me I was pushing the earbuds too far in. The first step of the AAT process is to test the earbud fit, since having a tight seal is so crucial to both noise cancellation and sound quality. I did have to cycle through a few different ear tip sizes and support wing combos before making a proper seal. Once I did, though, it noticeably dialed in my hearing measurements — and most importantly — the sonic detail and bass impact.
