Description: The Civil War Battle of Big Bethel took place June 10, 1861 near Newport news, Virginia. One of the earliest battles of the War was planned by Major Theodore Winthrop, 7th New York State Militia on the staff of General Ebenezer Peirce. One of the first to respond to President Lincoln's call for volunteers. Winthrop led the assault on General DH Hill's 1st North Carolina Volunteers and was mortally wounded, the first ranking Union officer killed in the War.
