The calligraphy of these coins is exceptional, and the craftsmanship is exquisite and uniform. They are one of the most beautiful currencies in Chinese monetary history. These meticulously minted Yongle Tongbao coins were mainly used for foreign trade, playing a significant role in the early Ming Dynasty's opening to the outside world and serving as a form of hard currency for international trade 600 years ago. “Yong Le (永乐)” in Chinese means perpetual happiness. Emperor Zhu Di, known by his reign title Yongle, is often referred to as Emperor Yongle or Yongle the Great by later generations. During his reign, he implemented political reforms, establishing the cabinet as a government institution. He conducted five military campaigns against Mongolia, reclaimed Annam (modern-day Vietnam), established the Nuerhachi Command in the northeast, the Hami Guard in the northwest, and several other pacification offices in the southwest, including Digu Ci and Dimasa. He also set up the Guizhou Provincial Administration to strengthen the defense of both the northern and southern borders, maintaining the integrity of China's territory. He dispatched Zheng He on multiple voyages to the Western Seas (Indian Ocean), strengthening friendly relations and expanding China's influence in the South China Sea. Additionally, Emperor Yongle ordered the compilation of the "Yongle Encyclopedia," and undertook the dredging of the Grand Canal. During his rule, the Ming Dynasty experienced economic prosperity and military strength, and both cultural and martial achievements were significantly enhanced, making his era known as the "Yongle Prosperous Era."
