KEYWORDS: Geoffrey Chaucer, Canterbury Tales, DESCRIPTION: From the Preface to the American Edition: As all Chaucerians know, the great advances of the past fifty years in Chaucer scholarship owe much to the work of American scholars, too numerous to name, too distinguished to need naming. It is a pleasure to acknowledge my continual indebtedness to their learning; let no faults that may be detected in my version be laid at their door.In this edition some passages which, upon reflection, seemed to me faulty or inelegant in the first (English) edition, I have sought to improve. I have another debt of gratitude to pay; four happy visits to America, particularly to American Universities, have made me many friends and pleasant memories. If, as I hope, American readers find pleasure in my version of Chaucer's masterpiece, I shall feel I have done something in return for many hospitalities. N. C. ************* Mid-20th century translation from the Middle English of Geoffrey's Chaucer's famous 14th century verse-tale of traveller's making their pilgrimage to Canterbury, in Penguin orange colours, aged to a deeper pumpkin brown. This is Penguin Number 22 in the US releases, per the back cover. It looks as though someone was reading this in 1963, judging from the torn-off calendar leaf used as a bookmark (included). CONDITION: Wear to covers, chipping at edges. Spine creased and previous owner has taped down a Library of Congress catalogue tag to the lower spine end. Previous owner's bookplate on IFC. Looks as though this Penguin may have had a jacket over the stiff card covers, the rear flap is still taped to the IBC. Binding seems sound but loose, with a deep rent opposite the title page that goes into the binding - could easily be stabilised with a bit of glue. A couple of infrequent pencil marks noted in the early pages, otherwise contents appear clean and unmarked. A reasonably good reading copy.
