Description: Baxter Banner #22 Cast Iron Antique Stove plus authentication items. Baxter Banner Box Number 22 cast iron wood-burning kitchen stove. Made in Mansfield, Ohio, between 1883-1916 (estimated 1904). Near excellent condition (burn hole in bottom of fire box – otherwise in great condition). What makes this stove unique is that it was the featured stove in the book “Baxter’s Banner Stoves – A Chapter in Americana”, written by H. Kenneth Dirlam in 1969. Mr Dirlam was the sales manager of the Baxter Stove Company for 12 years, from 1904 to 1916. The current owners spotted the stove while walking through Fischer’s Country Store in Fitchburg, WI on August 14, 1968. What caught their eye was that it was made in their home town of Mansfield, OH. At that time, the purchase price of $25 was rather hefty because the couple were living on a graduate student stipend of $2,600 per year! Nevertheless, they (we) purchased the stove, took it home, cleaned it up to remove the soot and a bit of grime and rust, painted it flat black with gold highlights, added a stove pipe to give it some authenticity, put a plant in the top of the stove pipe, and placed it in their living room as a conversation piece. Over the years, the stove has the living room or guest bedroom from Wisconsin to Washington to Maryland to Illinois and finally back to Ohio, just about 75 miles where the stove’s journey began about 120 years ago! This piece of furniture and the accompanying documents deserve to be displayed in a new home to preserve its history and heritage. The length overall is 31”, width is 15”, height to top of burner box is 22½”, length of burner box is 20”, and height of front tray is 10” (all dimensions approximate). Weight is approximately 65 pounds. This unique purchase includes: • Complete stove • “New (1968)” stove pipe pictured in book • Copper-plated tea kettle pictured in book (stamped “Made in Portugal” on bottom) • Several relevant newspaper articles published in the Mansfield News-Journal in 1969 describing this stove • The original book by Mr Dirlam. Note that several of the front pages of the book are loose from the rather fragile binding, but other than obvious signs of aging and a few smudge marks from being kept in the stove, the book is complete and in good condition. The complete package of stove, stove pipe, tea kettle, newspaper articles and book are available for $1,250. Free local pick-up near Carroll OH, or actual shipping cost is extra. This is without question a unique, one-of-a-kind collection of related memorabilia from the past.
