They're not so fragile that they'll break too easily, but kids can be quite persistent and absolutely nobody wants the chance of small pieces of plastic breaking off and going all about. PLA is usually slated for around 150 degrees Fahrenheit, but It's not going to melt on a desk with some sunlight but I really I wouldn't have it around much past 100 degrees practically speaking.
