Description: Traven, B. - Der Schatz Der Sierra Madre (The Treasure of the Sierra Madre) - Verlag der Buchergilde Gutenberg: Berlin, 1927 - True First Edition / First Printing / First/Mixed State - “Copyright 1927 by B Traven, Tamaulipas (Mexico)” stated on the copyright page with no mention of later printings as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. This is a first mixed state example which does not appear in the Treverton bibliography — The last word of the first line on page 18 is “und” however the chapter heading on page 103 is not inverted. “The nearer they get to their treasure, the farther they get from the law.” The book has tanning to the spine, general shelf wear with some rubbing to the edges and a few spots where there is fray just beginning. The dark colored top stain is intact but with a few little markings. The boards remain straight and the cover illustration is bright and clean. The binding is square and firm and internally there are no markings or writings. All together a very clean and very presentable example of the true first edition of Traven’s monumental work. A rarity as this particular variation is not in the comprehensive Treverton bibliography of Traven’s works. This novel was originally written in German and not published in the United States by Knopf until eight years later in 1935. Basis for the seminal 1948 film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre which starred Humphrey Bogart in one of his most memorable roles. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards and would win three for Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Writing. At the time of cataloguing this film was rated as the number 143rd best film of all time on IMDB. All books are offered with a full 30 day postage paid return policy.
