WIlson Letter 1918 Silver MedalHere we have a rare and historical Worlds Record Silver Medal and letter commissioned by the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation. The medal was presented by President Woodrow Wilson to the shipbuilders of the Camden City, New Jersey Ship Yard in recognition of their extraordinary effort in ship construction during a time of national need. As it says on the medal itself: "Launched in 27 days, Completed in 37 days" Presented by: U.S. President Woodrow Wilson Issued To: W.H. Williams Material: Solid Sterling Silver Date Issued: May 15, 1918 Total Weight: 0.62 ounces (17.7 grams) Diameter: 1.25 inches (31.75 mm) Medal Edge: Dual Edge / Plain Rim, 2 mm Obverse: Inscription: "United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation. Given In Recognition of Extra-Ordinary Effort In Ship Construction In Time of the Nation's Need." Reverse: Inscription: "Camden, May 15, 1918, World's Record 'S.S. Tuckahoe' Launched in 27 Days, Completed in 37 Days At The Yard Of New York Shipbuilding Corporation." Condition/Additional Notes:The medal comes with its original ribbon and pin clasp, still attached to the letter. The medal has never been cleaned, retaining a beautiful dark patina. The ribbon is in fair condition, with noticeable fraying and slight darkening of the thread, but still retains vibrant color, especially in the red. The paper and corners still lay nicely besides the folded crease that mayhave perhaps came from the mailing. Noticeable stains and discoloration on the letter. *Please Note that there are no authentication documents for the signature. Though Wilson notoriously typed his own letters, we are unsure if the signature was done by his hand or someone from his staff. It's very likely his signature, but we prefer to be transparent. This item was attained directly from the grandson of medals awardee, W.H. Williams.* Hallmarked Bailey Banks Biddle - Solid Sterling Silver Please review all images and read the details thoroughly before purchasing.
