Description: Handsome Tiffany, Young, & Ellis lap/travel sitting desk. Paper label notes their retail shop at 271 Broadway in New York. The name of the company was only Tiffany, Young, & Ellis from 1847-1853 so we know the desk was sold within that seven year period. Before that iteration of the company name it had been Tiffany & Co.. After 1853 it would be known as Tiffany & Co. again, and is to this day. The desk is top quality in every respect. Mother of pearl name plate (no monogram) and key hole really pop against the beautiful reddish brown wood. The wood by all rights appears to be proper old rosewood. There are three rings on inlaid metal around the border of the desk top. The outer layer I speculate may have been gilt silver, middle copper, and inner silver. The inside is top quality too. White lines boards cover the inner compartments, purple velvet lines the main compartment. Two hand blown glass inkwells have metal lids with flowers. Even the drawer pulls have a flower petal border where they meet the wood. One of my favorite things about this desk is that inside of were a stack of period calling cards. The feature the name of a man that I assume was the original owner of the desk. They will come with it when sold as well as one pen nov that was inside as well. Condition is very good with just she appropriate wear. There’s what looks like a small paint stain on the desk top. A quick wipe with paint thinner should take care of it. It bothered me not so I left it. There what appears to be an old ink stain in the same general location. Purple velvet is worn a bit in small spots. Looks like an ink spill left a mark on the white surface near the Tiffany label. Looks like some old ink drips on the inner wood surfaces in spots. At seams the linings are split a little in spots. Overall the condition is very strong though. The brass lock does not have a key anymore. The lock has a small cursive P hallmark in an Ivy circle. A gorgeous piece of American history and of Tiffany & Co. history. The desk displays well either open or closed. Tiffany & Co. has been a high end purveyor since their beginnings and this piece proves that in spades. There is only one other similar example for sale in the world as far as I can tell. It’s also on eBay. Apart from its slant top and different color velvet that desk is more or less the same as this one in most ways. The seller of the other desk, a long time antique dealer, is asking $2,500. I am asking $1,000 less for this example. It is fresh out of an old New England collection. Exterior dimensions approximately 14”x9”x5”. It will ship ASAP! Thanks Tiffany & Co. History: Entrepreneur Charles Lewis Tiffany (1812- 1901) partnered with friend and business partner, John B. Young in 1837, opening a stationery store, Tiffany & Young. Soon after, Tiffany bought out Young and the store became Tiffany & Co in 1839. In 1841, J.L. Ellis joined the business and the name became Tiffany, Young & Ellis. The company moved to 271 Broadway in 1847. In 1853, Tiffany bought out Ellis and the store's name returned to Tiffany & Company as it is known today.
