Antique oil painting. Unknown artist: ”The Speakeasy” (1878)

The painting is an atmospheric and beautifully detailed rendering of a woman entering a small farmhouse, which is surrounded by a garden with wild flowers and trees. An old inscription on the back of the frame gives away more interesting information about this farmhouse. It says: “Et bondehus ved Skanderborg Sø – Slukefter Malde..”, which means “A farmhouse near Skanderborg Lake (called) “Slukefter””. The last word “Malde” could be a name, but I’m not sure. Skanderborg sø is a lake located near the city of Skanderborg to the Southwest of Aarhus in Jutland and “Slukefter”(which means “quench (as in quench your thirst) after”, as it turns out, was a speakeasy located in the Northern corner of the lake. Little is known about the place, but old sources say that in the late 19th century, when farmers returned from markets or fairs in the area, they would often stop by this illegal tavern to have a nip of schnapps before going home. I’ve attached a photo from 1910 of the farmhouse, where it’s easy to see that it matches the painting. The painting is dated to 1878. Signed: Monogram: “SC?” in the lower left corner. SIZE: With frame: 36,5 cm/14.4" * 28,5 cm/11.2". Without frame: 25,5 cm/10" * 17,5 cm/6.9". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has minor scratches and stains.
