Good condition Shunga (春画) is a type of Japanese erotic art typically executed as a kind of ukiyo-e, often in woodblock print format. While rare, there are also extant erotic painted handscrolls which predate ukiyo-e. Translated literally, the Japanese word shunga means picture of spring; "spring" is a common euphemism for sex. The Japanese term Ukiyo-e (浮世絵) translates as picture of the floating world. Bijin-ga (美人画) is a portrait of a beautiful woman. Washi (和紙) is traditional Japanese paper processed by hand using fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub (Edgeworthia chrysantha), or the paper mulberry (kōzo) bush Shikishi (色紙, literally "colored paper") are rectangular sheets of heavy colored paper, used since ancient times as a basis for calligraphy and painting.
