Description: Antique Armand Marseille ‘My Dream Baby’ Bisque & Composition Doll 351/4K, c1926, sold as found. The Armand Marseille doll company was at the heart of the German doll making revolution in the 1890s. Started by Armand Marseille in 1865, as a toy company. They didn't make dolls until approximately 1885 and would continue until about 1930. Armand Marseille, Jr. was at the head of the company for the majority of the company's doll making years. Almost all of the doll heads were made of bisque porcelain which was made by the company, they would sometimes purchase the bodies from other companies. Doll bodies were generally made of composition, a mixture of sawdust and glue, or stuffed kid leather with bisque arms. Armand Marseille made a large variety of baby dolls including the Dream Baby. Armand Marseille dolls are generally very clearly marked on the back of the bisque head. As in this example: A.M. Germany 451 / 4k Reproduction Dream baby dolls heads were made in doll making classes, these have additional information after the ‘4k’. This is an original doll. This antique Armand Marseille German Dream Baby Doll has a bisque head with the most adorable features, this doll is sure to bring joy to any collector. The doll was manufactured in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The baby doll has sleeping eyes open mouth with two bottom teeth on 5 piece bent limb composition body. Her beautiful sleeping eyes, which open and close as they should, but the skin tone enamel has worn where the eyes appear to be closed. The bisque head with the impressed marking AM Germany 351/4K on the back, 351 is the mould number, 4K is the size number. The head is currently disconnected, the wooden disk that you hold vertically to insert into the head to hold it in place, is there, but due to damage to her body it is better at the moment disconnected. Her body where her legs join is badly damaged, so they do stay in place. The composite body is damaged below the waist and some of fibers are shedding. Her arms and legs are complete with the hooks, but not attached. All her fingers and toes are intact and in perfect condition. Please study the photos. The height of the doll is approx. 15 inches. The doll is dressed in her original silk dress and petticoat, woollen under dress and hand knitted vest and booties. There are moth holes due to the fabric being made of natural fibres and having been stored for many decades in a suitcase in the loft. Armand Marseille, is known for creating high-quality dolls.
