Description: Isaac Thompson was a well-known pharmacist who sold various “patent” medicines including “Dr. Isaac Thompson’s Celebrated Eye Water”. Thompson introduced this remedy in 1795 and it was continuously available for nearly 200 years in Connecticut and the country. In fact, it had the largest sales in the U.S. of any topical ophthalmic preparation in the 19th century. It wasn’t until the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 that the active ingredients of the Eye Water were revealed: opium, alcohol, and zinc sulphate. These are such neat little bottles. Both are crudely made with applied lips standing 3 ¾” high and not quite an inch around, boldly embossed all around “DR THOMPSON’S EYE WATER NEW LONDON CONN” from the late 1880s. One is shiny clean with wonderful bubbles and a stretchy neck. It does have a tiny lip flake. The other has been buried and the dirt wasn’t kind. It is hazy inside and out with some really nice bubbles and no damage. Looking at the top, both of the openings are off center. They are just plain old!
