Description: "American Indians and the Civil War" Official National Park Service Handbook published 2013.A War Between the States history whose story is not well known today. Native American tribes were divided much like my home state of Maryland. Maryland was an occupied Southern state during the war. In spite of the many abuses of Maryland's civilian population many in Maryland stayed loyal to the Union even some slave owners. A friend of mine had a slave ancestor that was given his freedom by his owner and 150 acres of land for joining the Union army. His descendants still live and work this farm today. I have another friend whose free Black ancestor fled south from Maryland to join the Confederate army after Baltimore was occupied by Union troops. He received a pension from Virginia until his death in the 1930's. To the day of his death he would proudly declare his loyalty to the South. I had two Maryland ancestors who fought for the North and their brother fought for the South. Many families in Maryland were bitterly divided. Native American tribes were also divided. In fact the last large Confederate army to surrender was a Cherokee army led by Stand Watie. Most tribes in the South sided with the South and felt they had much more in common with their agrarian neighbors than the industrial North. The North was rapidly expanding into Indian territory and some there during early colonial times even debated whether Indians were really human! Tribes in the North, when they joined Union armies were hoping to retain their ancestral lands but few were successful. In fact the Union used and improved their tactics used against the South to finally defeat the last of the free tribes of America's West. This book is biased towards the current politically correct view of the war but its rare photos and information is still a good read. 216 page soft cover book. With many rarely seen images of Native Americans in the War Between the States. Two small price stickers on the back cover and slight bend to back corner otherwise new condition. Size: 6" x- 9" tall.
