AMAZING CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S COLLECTION OF 6 ORIGINAL ARTIFACTS-PLS REVIEW PHOTOS

Description: AS A HISTORIAN, NOT JUST A SELLER, I'VE STUDIED THE CIVIL WAR FOR DECADES & WRITTEN 3 BOOKS ABOUT IT WHILE ALSO DEVELOPING AND PRODUCING FOUR OTHERS. AND AS A SELLER SINCE 1979 I HAVE COLLECTED, WRITTEN ABOUT AND SOLD HUNDREDS (PROBABLY MORE THAN A THOUSAND GIVEN 45 YEARS OF SELLING AMERICANA) OF CIVIL WAR TOKENS, BULLETS, LETTERS, MEDICAL ITEMS, DOCUMENTS AND SO ON. AT ONE TIME I HAD A DISPLAY OF "THE SOLDIER'S LIFE" DURING THE WAR, WHICH WAS ASSEMBLED TO PHOTOGRAPH AND ILLUSTRATE OUR YOUNG READER'S HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR; THAT SEVEN-BOOK AWARD-WINNING SERIES WAS PUBLISHED BY PENGUIN BOOKS/DUTTON CHILDREN'S BOOKS AND SCHOLASTIC FOR SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES THROUGHOUT THE U.S. THAT SERIES SOLD 700,000 TOTAL COPIES IN SOFTCOVER, HARDCOVER AND SPECIAL EDITION BOOKS FROM THE 1980S THROUGH THE EARLY 2000S. I'VE ASSEMBLED A SMALL VERSION OF THAT PREVIOUS DISPLAY AS A SINGLE LOT OFFERED HERE. WHILE THESE ITEMS ARE NOT BEING OFFERED SINGLY, WE CERTAINLY WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO CONTACT US IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR MOST ANY APECIFIC ITEM FROM THE CIVIL WAR. INCLUDED IN THIS LOT ARE ALL OF THE ITEMS YOU SEE PHOTOGRAPHED HERE: 1. WAR-DATED ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER FULL OF ACCOUNTS OF BATTLES AND OTHER NEWS (SHOWN IS A COPY OF THE PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWSPAPER. SINCE WE HAVE SEVERAL THE ONE PROVIDED MAY DIFFER IN THE DATE. BUT IF YOU ARE SEEKING A SPECIFIC PAPER PLEASE LET US KNOW. WE HAVE 100+ PAPERS FROM VARIOUS CITIES DURING THE WAR. 2. GRAPE SHOT OR CANISTER BALL. THIS SMALL CANNON BALL WAS ONE OF THE MOST DEADLY PIECES OF WEAPONRY IN THE WAR. A CANISTER (PICTURE A LARGE COFFEE CAN) WAS FILLED WITH THESE HEAVY MINIATURE CANNON BALLS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A GOLF BALL. WHEN FIRED AT THE ENEMY THOSE CANISTERS WOULD EXPLODE AND SEND THE INDIVIDUAL BALLS INTO-- AND USUALLY THROUGH!--THE CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS. EACH INDIVIDUAL BALL WAS CAPABLE OF INJURING, MAIMING OR KILLING MULTIPLE SOLDIERS IT ITS WAY. 3. WIRE RIM SPECTACLES. 4. A BEAUTIFUL HAND-PAINTED LOCKET THAT UNFORTUNATELY NO LONGER HAS PHOTOS, BUT A WIFE OR DAUGHTER'S PICTURE WAS OFTEN IN A LOCKET GIVEN TO THE SOLDIER TO KEEP WITH HIM ON WHAT COULD BE YEARS NOT WEEKS OR MONTHS AWAY FROM HOME. THIS LOCKET SHOWS MINIMAL WEAR AND WAS HAND-PAINTED AND LIKELY KEPT GUARDED CAREFULLY TUCKED AWAY IN THE SOLDIER'S BELONGINGS. ITS STORY WILL NEVER BE KNOWN; IT MIGHT HAVE EVEN BEEN GIVEN BY THE SOLDIER TO HIS WIFE WITH HIS PICTURE WHEN HE LEFT FOR THE WAR. 5. A CIVIL WAR TOKEN PROMOTING A SOLDIER'S FAIR. IT COULD BE SPENT ANYWHERE JUST LIKE THE LITERALLY MILLIONS OF TOKENS THAT CIRCULATED THROUGHOUT THE NORTH WITH THE SHORTAGE OF GOVERNMENT MINTED COPPER AVAILABLE.WE HAVE A WIDE SELECTION OF CIVIL WAR TOKENS BOTH PATRIOTIC AND STORECARDS, MORE THAN HALF OF WHICH ARE UNCIRCULATED. WE WILL BE LISTING MORE OF THEM SINGLY IN THE COMING WEEKS. 6. SHEAR TOP INK WELL, MOST LIKELY PURCHASED FROM THE SOLDIER'S REGIMENTAL SUTLER. THE SUTLERS TRAVELLED ALONG WITH THE ARMY TO BE A STORE IN A WAGON WHEREVER THE UNIT WAS SENT. SUTLERS WERE AN INTEGRAL PART OF A SOLDIER'S LIFE AND COULD PROVIDE ANYTHING FROM SOCKS TO WRITING PAPER TO COFFEE POT OR PAN. THEY OFTEN GAVE SOLDIERS THEIR TOKENS FOR CENTS-OFF ON THE NEXT PURCHASE. JUST AS OFTEN SUTLERS KEPT A LEDGER OF PURCHASES MADE ON CREDIT--TO BE DEDUCTED AUTOMATICALLY WHEN THE SOLDIER RECEIVED PAY. THE SHEAR TOP BOTTLES WERE SEALED SIMULTANEOUSLY WHILE BEING FILLED WITH INK WITH MOLTEN GLASS. THEY WERE KEPT THAT WAY UNTIL SOLD AND THEN THE TOP COULD BE CAREFULLY BROKEN OFF AND RESEALED WITH A CORK. THIS OF COURSE IS WHY THESE ARE ALWAYS FOUND WITH A JAGGED GLASS TOP EDGE. * * * * I NORMALLY DO NOT LIST LOTS OF MULTIPLE ITEMS AS IT IS EASIER AND LESS AN EXPENSE TO PURCHASE SINGLY. BUT IN THIS CASE I THOUGHT THE ITEMS WERE ALL SO INTEGRAL TO ONE ANOTHER IN THE COURSE OF THE WAR THAT I WOULD OFFER THEM TOGETHER. MOST PERSONAL USE ITEMS WERE DUG OR FOUND AT WINTERCAMPS WHERE THE SOLDIERS COULD SPEND MONTHS AT A TIME. EXPERIENCED TREASURE HUNTERS KNOW THAT GARBAGE PITS AT SUCH SITES ALMOST ALWAYS HELD A VARIETY OF COLLECTIBLE ITEMS DISCARDED 160 OR SO YEARS AGO. NATURALLY, TREASURES ARE SELDOM FOUND NOW, WITH BATTLEGROUNDS AND CAMPSITES PICKED OVER BY SCORES OF TREASURE HUNTERS FROM THE 1800S TO THE CURRENT CENTURY. ALSO INCLUDED WITH THE ABOVE SIX ITEMS IS A COPY OF ONE OF THOSE BOOKS THAT WAS PART OF THE YOUNG READER'S HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR. THE HISTORY BANK WILL BE LISTING DOZENS MORE CIVIL WAR ITEMS OVER THE COMING WEEKS AND MONTHS. ONE VERY RARE AND QUITE SPECTACULAR ITEM HAS BEEN CONSIGNED TO US--A BOOK LENGTH SOLDIER'S DIARY KEPT DAY-BY-DAY DURING THE WAR. IT PROVIDES RARE INSIGHT INTO THE WAR, FROM BATTLES TO MISSING HOME TO KILLING TIME OVER THE COLD WINTER.IT IS HOUSED IN A CUSTOM-BUILT MUSEUM-QUALITY SLIPCASE/BOX. I HAVE SEEN MANY DIARIES FROM THE WAR, AND THIS IS AS FINE AND VALUABLE AS ANY IN THE MARKETPLACE. THESE ARE SELDOM SOLD ON EBAY, BUT OCCASIONALLY SHOW UP IN MAJOR AUCTIONS FROM HERITAGE AND SOTHEBY'S TO MANY SMALLER HOUSES. I BELIEVE THAT FEW ARE SELDOM SEEN ON EBAY FOR TWO SPECIFIC REASONS: 1--THERE JUST ARE SO FEW OUT THERE AND 2--A PREFERENCE TO LET A LARGE AUCTION HOUSE HANDLE SUCH RARE AND EXPENSIVE ITEMS. THE CONSIGNOR AND I STILL NEED TO DISCUSS ASKING PRICE (VERY DEPENDENT ON WHAT EBAY OR AN AUCTION HOUSE WOULD WANT IN FEES) AND IF IT WILL BE OFFERED AS A SINGLE ITEM OR AS A 'HEADLINER' IN A CIVIL WAR SALE. THE BOOK BELONGS TO A LONGTIME CLIENT AND FRIEND WHO HAS OFTEN MADE HIS MASSIVE CIVIL WAR LIBRARY AVAILABLE AS AN INFORMATION SOURCE WHEN WE ARE RESEARCH FOR A PROJECT. THE MUSEUM QUALITY COLLECTION OF BOOK AND ALL SORTS OF EPHEMERA FILLS A LARGE ROOM WITH BOOKSHELVES AROUND THE PERIMETER. HE HAS BEGUN "THINNING" THE LIFETIME COLLECTION AND HAS ASKED US TO SELL SOME ITEMS FOR HIM. PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO ASK ABOUT THIS LOT, THE DIARY OR ANY OTHER ITEM(S) YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. THE CHARGE OF $13.95 IS FOR SHIPPING ALL OF THE ITEMS IN A LARGE FLAT RATE USPS PRIORITY RATE BOX.
