3-Digit Mechanical Counter VEEDER ROOT Push Button Tested Lot of 2 VINTAGE 1940s

Description: Please take the time to read through my entire item description and view all the photographs. I consistently prepare accurate and detailed descriptions and provide clear close up photographs for all my listings. The aforementioned notwithstanding, note the photos are still the biggest and most important part of this or any description. As the old saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words". For your consideration is this genuine VINTAGE 1940’s lot of (2) TWO resettable mechanical VEEDER-ROOT (VR) three-digit display stroke counters with convenient push-button activation. These two genuine vintage counters have (3) three digit count display windows and date back to the 1940’s. While rummaging through my father-in-law’s workshop I found this set of mechanical counters tucked away on a shelf where I suspect they have been sitting undisturbed for decades. I do not know what these counters were originally used for or exactly how old they actually are but I have been advised by a trusted source these are quality-made mechanical counters that were manufactured by Veeder-Root back in the 1940’s. The counters are very well made and constructed out of heavy metal. Each counter measures approximately 2-1/16” long, 1-3/16” wide and 1-13/16” tall. Each counter weighs approximately 4.20 ounces each and has a combined weight of approximately 8.40 ounces by themselves. Refer to description photos #20, #21, #22 and #23 to confirm the weight and size dimensions of the counters and for more details about what I have described. The counters are heavy metal with a crinkled brown painted surface. The top digit display window is glass and remains clear and damage free as can be confirmed in description photo #16. The front of each counter has a single push-button (one black and one white) that functions properly. As can be seen in the description photos, there is a coiled spring on each counter that surrounds the push-buttons. I do not know nor understand what purpose this spring serves as it appears to do nothing when the buttons are depressed and released…it’s just there… Note, as can be verified in all the description photos, specifically photos #11, #14 and #15, one side of the noted spring seen on the counter with the white button has come loose from its original mount. This does NOT affect the functionality of the counter. In fact, I contemplated simply removing both of the noted springs since they do not appear to serve any purpose but opted to leave the counters in their original state for the new owner to decide. The counter with the black push-button has a very small (approximately 1/8” long) removable metal collar that slips over the small flat metal reset tab located on the counter. This “collar” is easily removed and secured with a simple twist pull/push motion. Refer to description photo #12 depicting the aforementioned collar removed from the side of the counter and resting alongside of it. Here again, in my “opinion”, the collar is designed to prevent the accidental resetting of the counter. I also suspect since there is not a collar located on the white push-button counter in supports the “theory” these two pieces were most likely mounted in tandem alongside each other back in the day. Only my “guess”; you evaluate and decide for yourself. As can be verified in the description photos both counters remain in good overall condition with a few areas of light dust from having been sitting on a shelf for decades. This dust can easily be mitigated with a quick cleaning but I decided to leave the counters as found. The counters are shaped like “old-time” cash registers and each features a single push-button to activate the counter every time the button is depressed. One counter has a “BLACK” button and the other has a “WHITE” button as can be confirmed in the description photos. It should be noted the two counters can be fitted and/or “MATCHED” together as illustrated in description photos #13, #14, #15 and #16. I do not know if this is intentionally by design or just a coincidence but I thought it was worth mentioning for your consideration and evaluation. In my “opinion” these counters were likely mounted side-by-side back in the day and provided specific counts for two different functions and/or items. The metal bottom on each counter is embossed with a single-line made up of what appears to be a set of letter and numbers separated by the initials “VR” inside a circle. I assume the noted numbers and letters identify the specific model and manufacturer of the counters. This information reads as described below. Refer to description photos #17, #18 and #19 for more details about what I have described. “TD-2416 VR Z-33985-A” Each counter performs flawlessly; with each depression of the button, the counter numerically increases by one digit. Each counter will count up to a maximum of “999” before turning the numbers back to “000”. Each counter also features a small flat metal tab located on the LEFT side of the counter that allows the user to manually “RESET” the counter back to “000” at any point in time. Refer to description photos #2, #8, 11, #12, #13 and #21 to verify the location of the noted flat metal reset tab I described. To verify both counters function properly I photographed each counter with different numerical numbers on their dials and then manually “reset” the counters back to “000” again. Refer to close-up description photos #6 and #7 for more details about what I have described. As can be confirmed in the description photos, both counters show minor surface blemishes from genuine age and handling throughout the decades. There is also a light amount of dust that has accumulated from sitting on a workshop shelf for decades. Again, each counter functions properly and will consistently provide the user with an accurate means to record a count for whatever task/action you want to monitor. Refer to all the description photos to confirm the condition of each counter and for more details about what I have described. For your further review and consideration I have included a brief description of the Veeder-Root Company below. “Veeder-Root's beginnings can be traced to 1866, when the Root Company, a hinge manufacturer, was founded in Bristol, CT. The following year, the company expanded to manufacture counting and measuring devices for production, textile equipment and census taking. Almost 30 years later in 1895, Curtis Veeder, the founder of Veeder Manufacturing Company, invented a cyclometer to record the miles traveled on a bicycle. He promoted the cyclometer with the slogan, “It's Nice to Know How Far You Go”. The cyclometer's success led to a full line of Veeder counting devices. In 1928, the Root and the Veeder Companies merged to form Veeder-Root, Incorporated of Hartford, Connecticut, the largest manufacturer of counting and computing devices in the world. While the majority of Veeder-Root's customers used the counters to control manufacturing processes, in the early 1930s, one customer had the foresight to incorporate a Veeder-Root counter into his gasoline pump. This innovation introduced Veeder-Root to the petroleum industry and marked its beginning as a petroleum technology leader. These new mechanical computers allowed gas station attendants to "fill'er up" without having to calculate cash sales as they pumped gas. Through the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, Veeder-Root counters went through many changes because of wartime material shortages, growing competition and the addition of tenths of cents to the counters. Through these decades of change, Veeder-Root mechanical computers could be found on more than 90 percent of U.S. and Canadian gasoline pumps”.
