In the 12th century it evolved into a chivalric order and assumed a military role in the defence of the crusader kingdoms in the Holy Land. Following the loss of the crusader kingdoms, in 1291, the order sought refuge in Cyprus, and in 1310 it moved the convent to Rhodes, which was lost to the Ottomans in 1522. In 1530, Emperor Charles V of Spain gave the Maltese Islands to the Order by way of donation. In 1565, the Great Seige of Malta was presented as a great victory. The knights were widely regarded as Christian heroes and Malta was projected as a bulwark of Christendom against Ottoman expansion. "Knights of the Past" is the first bullion coin produced by the Central Bank of Malta in collaboration with the Germania Mint.
