Some historians believe his death was caused by arsenic poisoning. His body was exhumed, but an abnormal level was not found. Taylor was the first president not previously elected to office. Taylor was a career officier in the United States Army, rising to the rank of major general and becoming a national hero for his victories in the Mexican-American War. His top priority as president was to preserve the Union.
