Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver, the coin includes the Mints 109 year-old 'P' mintmark on the reverse. Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act of 1965, the coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse. One of a limited number of 2009 Australian Koalas to be housed on superbly illustrated presentation card, the coin's full mintage will be officially declared by The Perth Mint at the end of 2009. Koala - Phascolarctos cinereus (ashy-grey pouched bear) The koala is an internationally recognized symbol of Australia. An arboreal marsupial, it spends most of its time in trees. Inactive during the day, it feeds on the foliage of its favorite eucalypts during the night. Adult males weigh up to 12kg. Females grow to around 8kg, producing one young per year. Distributed throughout eastern Australia, koalas are declining in many areas. Among the problems facing local populations are clearing, fragmentation and degradation of habitat. Disease, dogs, and road traffic represent other threats. Because of its cultural importance, there is significant concern about the koala's future. Listed as vulnerable in some States, the koala is subject to management and conservation action to reverse its declining numbers.
