Description: Guy Maccoy (1904-1981) is a well listed American painter, printmaker and teacher who was known for his mastery of the silkscreen printing process. In 1930, he won a scholarship to attend the prestigious Art Student's League in New York. There he worked alongside of fellow students, Jan Matulka, Thomas Hart Benton and Jackson Pollock. In 1933, he beganworking with the WPA designing murals and shortly afterwards he began developing ideas for the silkscreen printing process which would help he and his fellow artists make a living by selling realistic images of their works in multiple copies. The prints produced by this process became known as serigraphs. In the 1940's, he helped found the National Serigraph Society which promoted serigraphs as original fine art. Maccoy had a long career as a teacher and influenced many artists by instructing them in the art of silkscreen printing. The artist's works can be found in many important collections including the New York Public Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The artworks for sale are two original silkscreen prints from 1949. One is entitled "It is Evening" and portrays a mare and her colt and the other is entitled "Three Trees and a Low Sky" and depicts a trotting white stallion. Each piece measures 12" high by 15" wide and is in a horizontal or landscape perspective. There is a luminous quality to these images in which the blue sky almost radiates against the green foliage and black and white horses. The two serigraphs were each glued to a wood backing and there is some toning in the margins around the artist's signatures and titles (photo 3). Each silkscreen print is signed by the artist in pencil at the lower right and they are also dated in pencil "49". The titles are writen in pencil at the lower left. The images are in very good shape with bright colors and they will look wonderful when they are properly matted and framed.
