RES. 283 DIRECTING THE COMMITTEE ON COMMERCE TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSES LEADING TO THE WRECK OF THE WHITE STAR LINER "TITANIC". RARE, Original Hardcover, includes the speech of Senator William Alden Smith of Michigan, Chairman of the Committee. The Titanic disaster hearings began on Friday April 19, 1912 - four days after the disaster. A disaster report was commissioned by the Senate, which directed the Subcommittee of the Committee on Commerce to “investigate the causes leading to the wreck of the White Star Liner Titanic”. The book provides transcripts of the hearings during which those involved in the disaster gave testimony of their experience. This includes J. Bruce Ismay, chairman and managing director of the White Star Line who infamously became the highest ranking White Star official to survive the sinking of the Titanic. The book itself is in overall good condition with the exception of the decorative endpaper at the front and back of the volume and a couple of areas where newspaper clippings concerning the disaster kept by a previous owner caused yellowing on the paper. The clippings are included. 1157 pages, plus the speech of Senator Alden at the end of the testimony. Heavy. This volume of testimony, with dramatic first-person accounts, remains a foundational text. Scarce. Shipping to destinations other than USA will be more costly.
