Description: 16.00 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE StLouBrown's Bygone Days "Let Bygones Be back" Vintage 1980 “Connally: Leadership for America” bumper sticker for former Treasurer Secretary John Connally’s campaign for the Republican nomination for president. Connally (1917-1993) was President John F. Kennedy’s Secretary of the Navy but left the administration in late 1961 to run for Texas governor. In that position, he was wounded by gunfire from JFK’s assassin in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. Connally served as Democratic governor from 1963 to 1969, but served as Republican Richard Nixon’s Treasury Secretary and switched parties in 1973. He raised and spent more money than any other GOP candidate for the 1980 nomination but couldn’t overcome the popularity of conservative front-runner former Gov. Ronald Reagan of California.
