Description: This is for an original Pro Sports Bob Friend autograph model glove which has been signed by 24 Washington Senators during spring training in 1970. The give aways to tell it’s the year 1970 is that it contains the signature of pitcher Dennis Dalton, who never made the major league roster, and outfielder Lee Maye, who was acquired by the team in June 20, 1969 from the Cleveland Indians. The glove had originally belonged to a young fan named Donna Newbery who gave the glove to Senator’s radio announcer Ron Menchine who started the ball rolling with the only inscription “To Donna Best Wishes Ron Menchine”. It was then passed around and by the time the smoke had cleared 23 others had signed the glove including Hall of Famers manager Ted Williams and coach Nellie Fox. The entire roster of players who signed the glove include: Ron Menchine Dennis Dalton Dick Bosman Denny Higgins Mike Epstein Jim Shellenback Ed Stroud Tim Cullen Paul Casanova Ed Brinkman Camilo Paschal Bernie Allen Jim Hannan Casey Cox Hank Allen Lee Maye Frank Howard Sam Bowens Dave Baldwin Joe Camacho Bob Humphries George Sabato Ted Williams Nelson Fox This is definitely an item that belongs in the Washington Senators Hall of Fame. All of the signatures are bold and clear with only the Denny Higgins having a bit of a smudge. With the glove opened, you can display it as a single signed Ted Williams with a gorgeous signature on the pinky of the glove, but the glove should really be displayed open on a rotating hand to show each and every one of the 24 signatures. To put the Senators 1970 season in perspective, Darold Knowles would lead the team with a miniscule 2.05 ERA but with a 2-14 record and Frank Howard would win 2/3’s of the triple crown with 44 HR’s and 126 RBI’s. 1969 AL Manager of the Year Ted Williams, who was coming off the teams best and only winning season, had the team return to its losing ways as they returned to sixth in the six team division. You’ll never find another piece like this so don’t let this one get away. Truly one of a kind and a must have for the ultimate Washington fan. Check out the scans and email with any questions.
