Description: Intended as a 'tonic for the nation', and to lift the country's spirits following the end of the Second World War, the Festival of Britain was a spectacular cultural event to showcase British manufacturing and design. To celebrate this the 1951 commemorative crown was released in 1951. This was one of only two crown types issued during the reign of George VI. It bears on its edge the Latin inscription MDCCCLI CIVIUM INDUSTRIA FLORET CIVITAS MCMLI - By the industry of its people the State flourishes 1951. Referred to as the 'Festival of Britain crown' it features a portrait of the monarch on the obverse and St George and the dragon design on the reverse. Item was a well loved collector's piece, now looking for a new home!
