The decision to use steel was a direct response to the critical need for copper during the war. The coins were produced at all three mints: Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, and they are often easily distinguishable from other Lincoln cents due to their silver-gray appearance. However, the steel composition presented problems. The zinc coating tended to wear off quickly, leading to rust and other deterioration, particularly when the coins were exposed to moisture. Additionally, the coins were often mistaken for dimes because of their color, leading to public confusion.DesignThe design of the 1943 steel cent is the same as other Lincoln wheat cents. The obverse features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, designed by Victor David Brenner, who created the design to commemorate the centennial of Lincoln's birth in 1909. The reverse features two stalks of wheat, a design that had been in use since the Lincoln cent's introduction in 1909.Aftermath and LegacyThe steel cents were only produced for one year, and in 1944 the U.S. Mint returned to using copper, sourced from recycled shell casings, for the production of pennies. Over time, the 1943 steel cent became a collector's item, particularly in uncirculated condition. A notable aspect of the 1943 penny is the existence of rare copper cents from that year, which were mistakenly struck using leftover copper planchets. These rare 1943 copper cents are among the most sought-after coins in U.S. numismatics. Shipping This item ships free. I use new packaging materials for each purchase and package items securely. Genuine/Authentic Coin Guarantee (About The Coin Daddy) I guarantee all coins I sell are genuine/authentic. I've been a collector of primarily U.S. coins for more than 3 decades and have been a member of eBay since 2002. All items are sold "as is" and without representation or warranty of any kind. I generally refrain from assigning coin grades. However, when offered, these reflect a considered and honest opinion. They are offered as a guide and should not be regarded as a warranty or guarantee. Differences of opinion regarding coin grading cannot be used as justification for rescission of sale. Each bidder must rely on their own judgment of grade/condition. Buyers are responsible for satisfying themselves as to all aspects of property condition and descriptions, including without limitation genuineness, attribution, provenance, authenticity, authorship, completeness, condition, damage, repairs, restorations, estimates of value, and all matters referred to in listing entries and item descriptions, condition reports, and elsewhere. Video Quality If a video appears small, try hovering your mouse cursor or tapping your phone/tablet screen, as this often increases the size. I apologize for the poor quality of any videos. My understanding (from a couple quick internet searches) is that this is an issue for sellers across eBay. For instance, eBay requires all video uploads to be 150MB or less, which undoubtedly impacts quality. If you have a solution to the issue, I'd be grateful if you let me know. Returns and Non-Payment In addition to eBay's Money Back Guarantee, I want you to be fully satisfied with your purchase. If you need to return an item, please ensure the following conditions are met: The item must be received by me within 30 days of the purchase date. The item must be in its original packaging and in the same condition as received. The tamper-resistant label must be intact and unbroken. Please be aware that within the United States, tamper-resistant labels are legally unenforceable. However, they serve as a method to help both parties ensure the integrity of the item. By purchasing this item from me, you agree to inspect the coin prior to removing it from its holder. Removal or tampering with the label will void the return policy. Returns that do not meet these conditions will not be accepted. Please contact me for return instructions. I report non-paying bidders, so please contact me with questions prior to bidding or purchase. I record the packing and drop-off of all items purchased. If an item has been removed from its holder (e.g., a slab or a 2x2 flip) or has otherwise been tampered with, it will be reported to eBay and not accepted for return.
