Description: This is an Antique R 1-9 speed controller handle. This particular handle was from a subway car with General Electric operating components. This handle is made from steel. This handle still has the spring that forces it up for the "dead man" feature. This handle came from the R 1-9 cars of the IND subway, which were built in many waves by a few different builders (American Car & Foundry, Pullman, and Pressed Steel - between 1930 and 1940. There were over 1800 built. The last of them were retired and scrapped in the 1970s. A few still exist as part of museum collections, including the New York City Transit Museum and the Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven, CT. Each car had two driving positions - one at each end. Each driving position had one of these handles, one handle for brakes, and the 'reverse key,' which controlled Forward-neutral-reverse. This handle measures 13 inches long and 5 inches tall. This handle is in excellent condition. It is in "as removed" condition with some original subway dirt (no extra charge). Please carefully review the photos before bidding or buying. Great for bar or restaurant, dorm room, den, etc. Makes a unique gift that you can't buy at Sears or Target, or Restoration Hardware. Truly a museum quality antique. Own a piece of New York history! Item will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail within the USA. Foreign buyers will be charged actual shipping charges. Please see our other auctions for more great NY subway memorabilia.
