Description: 1906 G.A.R. 40th NATL. ENCAMPMENT CANTEEN BADGE MINNEAPOLIS MINNEHAHA FALLS1906 G.A.R. 40th NATL. ENCAMPMENT CANTEEN BADGE MINNEAPOLIS MINNEHAHA FALLS. This listing is for a vintage Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) badge. The top bar consists of the membership badge eagle grasping the sword blade, cannon and cannon balls. Scrools running behind the eagle read "40th National Encampment" and August 1906 13th-18th". From the top bar hangs a small GAR star with intertwinded "GAR" in red, white & blue enamel. The reversen of the star section has maker's name, "S, D. Childs & Co. Engravers, Chicago". The ribbon (which is torn, missing bottom) is more orange than the usual gold. The ribbon hangs behind the star and would have been connected to the suspension loop (which in the shape of a wreath, that can swivel to rotate the badge front to back and back to front easily. Suspended from the wreath is a canteen shape badge that feature in the center the Minneapolis G.A.R. Memorial Hall (marked across top MEMBER and on the bottom G.A.R. Memorial Halls, Minneapolis, and on either side is a barrel and a wheat sheaf). The reverse is marked on bottom edge MINNEHAHA with a scene of the Minnehaha Falls flanked by a quiver and bow on one side and peace pipe and tomahawk on the other. The piece is in very good condition (ribbon damage noted above), as seen in photos. The canteen badge has a diameter of approx. 1-5/8" and when packed for shipping it weighs 7 ounces.
