Description: This is an old check, dated December 26, 1899, from the National Bank of Redemption. The check is written to the Highland Embroidery Works. The check is signed on the front by HenryChandler Whipple (1846-1928). a notablebusinessman who was first the Treasurer, and later the President, of the Dodge-DavisManufacturing Company, which was located in Bristol, Grafton County, New Hampshire. Whipple first engaged in manufacturing in Enfield, New Hampshire in 1873. In 1884, he removed to Bristol as a member of the firm of Dodge, Davis & Co., and was namedAssistant Superintendent. The company was incorporated in Oct 1887, as the Dodge-Davis Manufacturing Company, Henry becoming Treasurer and Resident Manager. Whipple became President of the company in 1897. Whipple also served as Trustee of the Bristol Savings Bank, and as President of the First National Bank of Bristol since its organization in 1898. His old home is currently operating as a bed-and-breakfast called The Whipple House. Henry Whipple's wife was Lilla Josephine Plummer Whipple (1852-1930). Together,they raised five children. The check is also signed by Louis Joseph Ruhr, Jr.(1872-1939), who was the Secretary and Treasurerof the Highland Embroidery Works. He was married to Kathryn Barbara Hofreiter Ruhr (1878-1952). The check is also signed by a third person,whose name looks like "E. A. Perokey ". The check is in very good condition. It is now enclosed in a clear plastic sleeve, for protection.
