Numerous in-text illustrations. Original cloth stamped in decorative blind. Exhibits heavy edgewear and surface loss, soiling, amateur home repair to spine, backed in old black tape - upper hinge and title pages reinforced with archival tape, fragile, in need of repair. Old tidemarks at upper endleaves, moderate toning and foxing throughout, otherwise contents clear and unmarked. This copy bears contemporary penciled presentation inscription at second free endpaper from Ohio Democratic politician George W. Holmes: "To D. H. Holmes from Geo. W. Holmes - To L. H. Gorgas, Capt. of Ordinance, United States Army. Dresden: 1855. Second Edition, Revised and Augmented, with Explanatory Plates, pages [177]-232, with 13 folded maps. Original blindstamped cloth exhibiting edgewear and surface loss, soiling, with the same amateur black tape backing, split at lower hinge, needs conservation. Toning at pastedowns, endleaves browned, various degrees of toning and spotting throughout, penciled annotations at upper pastedown and front flyleaf. Contemporary penciled inscriptions (2) at upper and lower endpapers from notorious Copperhead George Hunt Pendleton (Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate in 1864 against Lincoln and Johnson) to Ohio politician George W. Holmes: "Geo. W. Holmes from Hon. Geo. H. Pendleton."
