The page opposite the front cover has the name of a prior owner J.M. Snyder written on it. He was a curator at the Philadelphia Museum of art. His books were purchased in an estate sale by my grandmother in the 1950's. It has been safely packed up since the 1960's and unfortunately forgotten until my parents recently moved and was found again. It is time for someone to cherish this again like it had been in the past. Importance: An edited version of the book by Robert Evans Peterson was published in the United States in 1851 as Familiar Science; or, the Scientific Explanation of Common Things, with a revised edition following in 1863. These versions were edited and rearranged in order to make them more suitable for American pupils and were used as a text-book by schools in Pennsylvania and Brooklyn.[23] Brewer wrote to Peterson expressing his satisfaction at the rearrangement but nevertheless prepared a revised edition of his own which was published in the US in 1864. This edition was digitized and republished by the University of Michigan Library in 2005 following a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of Making of America IV: the American voice, 1850–1877.Dimensions: 6 1/4" tall and 4 1/4" wide Condition: See detailed photos. The condition of the Exterior and interior are mixed. Interior is in very nice condition but Exterior Leather Spine and Front Cover Page Binding are in poor condition. Interior pages are all intact and the pages are off-white with no interior writing and no signs of foxing, mildew, or insect damage. The page opposite the front cover has the name of a prior owner J.M. Snyder written on it. The exterior leather spine and is both cracked and displayed from the binding. It is mostly but not entirely complete - see photos. The Front cover is separating from the book, the rest of the pages are firmly intact.
