This map is perhaps the most sought after of all atlas maps showing the Western United States. This second 1849 edition of the map represents the first significant update since the map's first appearance in the New Universal Atlas, replacing an earlier 1849 edition, which bears the date. The most obvious addition to the map is the notation and coloration of the Gold Regions of California. However, perhaps even more significant is the inclusion in red outline of Fremont's route through the west, extending from Pike's Peak to San Diego, through San Francisco and the Gold Regions to the Columbia River and along the Snake and Lewis Rivers through South Pass, along with his route across the Great American Desert between Salt Lake and Sacremento City. It is this portion of the map that shows the most remarkable cartographic transformation, with over a dozen north south cordilleras added where none had existed in the earlier editions of the map. The two notes on the Great Interior Basin of California have also been removed, although the name remains. The map includes dozens of Indian Names, early settlements and other features of note. All of the Upper California Missions are noted, as are early forts. In Oregon Territory, the Presbyterian Mission on the Kooskooskee River is shown, as is Ft. Walla Walla, Dr. Whitmore's Ft. Boise, Lewis & Clark's Route, Ft.Kootanie, Ft. Okanagan, Spokane House, Ft. Colville, Ross's Rapids, Ft. Hall, Ft. Umqua, Canoe Camp and the Oregon Trail. A highly important map, being the first map of the west to be included in a widely distributed American Commercial Atlas.Map shows California, Southwest, Rocky Mountains, Northwest.
