The hand-colored map depicts ancient Ptolemaic Germany and is beautifully illustrated with topographical features, ancient tribal/place names, and a wonderful illustration of Claudius Ptolemy at lower right at the seaside at work on a map. The map is marked in part GERMANIA PTOLEMAEI. EXCULPT CHR. WEIGELIUS NORIMBERGAE. There is also a mounting order ticket affixed to the obverse from the establishment that we presume was tasked with preparing the map for framing (see pictures). The printed area of the map measures roughly 17 5/16” x 12” and the overall sheet measures roughly 20” x 14 3/8”. As would be expected of an item of this age, the map has aging, discoloration, yellowing, wrinkles, creases, scratches, nicks, fading, dirty and/or stained areas, printing imperfections, general wear, and a centerfold as issued that at bottom has heavy wear. The map is mounted to a backing-type board or sheet. This circa 1720 original antique copperplate engraved hand-colored Christopher Weigel map of Ptolemy’s ancient Germany is sure to be a nice addition to your collection.
