Our wildflower herb farm is located in the far corner of Northeast Iowa in the Upper Mississippi River Valley. Here in Elkader at our woodland farm we have been planting and growing herbs for 19 years. We use only organic conservation practices. Our herbs were all started from the wilds of Iowa woodlands. While now considered a cultivated herb, don't be fooled, the roots are as close to wild as you can get. The roots or Rhizomes can be divided and produce several more plants but most just plant mature roots. The mature roots will send out small runners that will establish new plants quickly. Generally new plants will come up 6-12 inches from the mother plant.Planting instructions are easy. Find an area with 60-80% shade mixed light. Plant the root about 2" under worked soil and put some form of ground cover over the planted area. Maybe water one time as you plant the roots.Hydrastis canadensis L., a member of the Ranunculaceae family, is native to North America with a natural range from southern Quebec to northern Georgia and west to Missouri.
